Benji! This is done with 3d software. For example, in Cinema 4D there's a 'Sketch and Toon' module. Check it on the internet, there are various tutorials. Also, there also is software called 'Sketch up' in which you can make 3d models in a more easy way. (check the internet) Or try this one: http://www.gratissoftware.nu/gratis-google-sketchup-software.php You can download it for free. Don't know it but maybe it works. You can make a 3d model in one of these programs, apply a rotation movement (don't know if it's possible to animate with this software) and export it as a quicktime movie. Import it in AE and do the masking stuff and transits. A few years ago I made this one. Same idea. I rendered the same model 1 version with normal textures, and 1 version with sketch and toon.
